A Moving Milestone when Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"He is a top tactician who knows football intimately, and that's the most important thing.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black footballer, I would be lying if I said this moment doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his historic first appearance for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also owns the London club.

There have been just 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – excluding individuals holding interim roles – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"When youngsters observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, from a household that fights for equality… it is powerful demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, it is an enormous step for the club, for the capital, for every young person with big dreams.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Data Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present top flight gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour across English football is matched by a lack of diversity in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, research by Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on figures from eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching positions – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as a the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of ability present in the ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches desire a chance to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to break those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become the fourth full-time British managers currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's other big five divisions in terms of homegrown representation.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight coaches in Italy are from Italy, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, 12 of the 18 in Germany and Ten of the 18 are French.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all aspiring British managers from an academy background are, to some degree no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It's truly motivating to young English academy coaches to witness an individual land that job with his background and we hope he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief stint at then-League One side Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling inequality in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not influence ability arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how vast under-representation leads to misunderstandings of players from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "passionate", noting that he understood the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to join him with a move from France to West London in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" upon hearing a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues boasted the top flight's first black manager in Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.

Elliott later worked in multiple executive roles, among them the FA's equality board|
